Our Cancer Support service provides emotional and practical support and assistance to older people living in Maidstone affected by cancer.

We understand that living with cancer can feel lonely and may cause a range of emotions and needs that affect daily life. We will meet with you to understand what the most important issues are to you and the impact your diagnosis has had on your life. We aim to provide a service that responds directly to your individual needs. These can include help with practical issues or emotional issues that may not be met by statutory services.

Tasks might include:

  • shopping

  • continuing hobbies and interests

  • helping with pets e.g dog walking

  • prescription collection

  • providing companionship

  • transport to an appointment/consultation

  • a friendly chat

  • someone to act as a sounding board for decision making and future planning

  • just simply being alongside someone to reduce feelings of fear and anxiety, loneliness and isolation

This is a free, confidential service provided by trained, supported and supervised volunteers.

The service accepts referrals from health and social care professionals, from statutory and voluntary organisations and from individuals contacting us for support. If you are referring someone else please ask for their permission.

Once the referral has been made the Cancer Support Coordinator will make an appointment to visit you in your home and will discuss with you how we may be able to support you with emotional and practical support. We will then match you to a volunteer. The support is not time limited, it is available for as long as you need it.
