Celebrating 50 Years of Volunteers

04 Jun 2025

As we celebrate 50 years since our founding as the Maidstone Volunteer Bureau, I’m proud to reflect on how far we’ve come—and how central volunteering remains to everything we do at Involve Kent.

The word “Involve” quite literally has VOL at its heart, and that’s no accident. Today, we are powered by over 150 dedicated volunteers—from drivers helping people get to vital appointments, to activity support volunteers working with both adults and children across our community. Their commitment, compassion, and energy are the lifeblood of our organisation.

Nationally, volunteering continues to play a vital role in society. According to the Community Life Survey 2023/24, around 12.9 million adults in England volunteered formally at least once in the past year. While participation has declined from previous years, the value of those who do volunteer has never been greater. The UK voluntary and community sector contributes billions to the economy annually and supports countless individuals through social connection, wellbeing, and opportunity and volunteering both drives and supports this work.

At Involve Kent, we see this impact every day. Volunteers help reduce loneliness, support people to live independently, and create inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive. They are not just helping others—they are shaping a stronger, more connected Kent.

As CEO, I want to thank every volunteer who has been part of our journey. Whether you’ve given an hour or a lifetime, you’ve made a difference. And if you’re thinking about getting involved, there’s never been a better time. Join us—and be part of the next 50 years of community-powered change.
